"This is the future."
Milliken & Company hosts scicu student/faculty research symposium
Autor : Zachary Urban
The psychological effects of interior design. Links between ancient languages. The success of sustainable agriculture in Costa Rica.
These were a few of the research topics explored at the 28th annual South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) Student/Faculty Research Symposium. During the event, 29 undergraduate students presented results from months of scientific research. Students like Anna Pilgrim of Southern Wesleyan University, who is researching how to improve the foods we eat every day. She analyzed the prevalence of pollutants and pesticides in raw honey produced in Upstate South Carolina.
“This is the future right here,” L. Jeffrey Perez, Ph.D., President and CEO of SCICU, said. “Thinking about our environment, thinking about our needs in ways that haven’t occurred to us yet…it starts with asking questions and pursuing the answers.”
The Symposium was held on Feb. 16 and hosted at Milliken & Company’s Global Headquarters in Spartanburg, S.C. SCICU is a nonprofit organization established in 1953 to promote independent higher education in South Carolina through fundraising, scholarships, research, collaboration, and legislative liaison. Roger Milliken was one of SCICU’s founding members, and Milliken has supported the organization since its inception, including a recent grant award.
“The Milliken Foundation is proud to support SCICU with a grant that has provided scholarships to one student at each of the five historically black colleges that are members of SCICU,” Milliken Chief Marketing Officer Danna Vetter, a SCICU board member, said.
Seventy years later, The Roger Milliken Center hosts the Research Symposium annually. Attendees are treated to coffee and lunch by Milliken’s Guest Services team and in-house catering crew, Bon Appétit. Dr. Perez expressed his gratitude to Milliken for supporting the students’ research projects.
“What you see at the Symposium is the innovation that is important to Milliken,” Perez said.
