Thai Brands See Value in the UL Label
What You Should Know
Given its growing packaging sector and the strength of housewares sales, the Thai market is experiencing exponential demand for plastics. But not just plastics—responsibility manufactured plastics.
Today’s consumer is increasingly interested in sustainability and is willing to pay for environmentally friendly products. This trend mirrors what we’re seeing across the plastic value chain as a whole: A strong commitment to sustainably made plastics that offer consumers value and top-notch performance.
Milliken is invested in enhancing the plastics supply chain, from creating innovations that support smart plastic production to helping brand owners harness resulting sustainable benefits. In the few years alone, our team has worked with 13 Thai brands and 94 private label groups—including plastic converters like JCJ JCP, BigOne, and TC Polyworks—to adopt the UL Environmental Claim Validation label to help tell the story of sustainable plastics to consumers.
Thai companies are seeing value in the UL Environmental Claim Validation label. JCP shared that “having UL-certified products is one of the key communication methods that let our customer know that we are committed to minimizing environmental impact.” BigOne echoed this, saying a “UL label creates a sense of quality and trustworthiness for our products, while supporting a professional, eco-friendly look for our BigOne brand.”
TC Polyworks added, “The UL label adds credibility and validation to our claims of product safety and quality. It also creates opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with other businesses and organizations. Our affiliation with the UL label is a valuable asset that sets us apart in the market and reinforces our dedication to sustainability and customer satisfaction.”
JCJ summed it up: “Joining the UL mark offers numerous advantages for both the environment and our business. It enables us to showcase our unwavering dedication to minimizing our environmental footprint, thereby bolstering the positive perception of our brand among customers. Consequently, this fosters increased purchases and support for our cause.”
Here are a few things to know when considering if the UL Environmental Claim Validation label is right for your project.
What is the UL Environmental Claim Validation (ECV) label?
It can be tough to navigate the world of sustainable claims as a consumer. That’s the benefit of the UL Environmental Claim Validation (ECV) label, a third-party testing program provided by UL Solutions. As a global leader in applied sciences, UL Solutions delivers testing, inspection, and certification services that support product innovation and business growth. When customers see a UL label, they can be confident that UL has independently verified the product’s claims.
Milliken’s UL Environmental Claim Validation label, specifically, shows that certain Milliken plastic additives provide major energy savings during production. These savings are passed to brand owners and converters, who then have the chance to incorporate the UL Environmental Claim Validation label insignia onto their end product or packaging.
What Milliken products are eligible for the UL Environmental Claim Validation program?
Milliken currently offers two products eligible for the UL Environmental Claim Validation label: Millad NX 8000 and Hyperform HPN.
- Millad NX 8000, when used as a polypropylene (PP) clarifier, imparts performance and clarity characteristics important to packaging and houseware applications. In addition, Millad NX 8000 allows conversion temperatures to be lowered during the injection-molding process. This reduces processors’ energy use and accompanying CO₂ emissions for an energy savings of, on average, 10%—a claim verified by UL.
- Hyperform HPN, a nucleating performance additive, increases crystallization temperature and rate of crystallization in PP resin, which boosts processing productivity by reducing cooling and cycle times. Injection-molding processors can see significant energy savings with Hyperform HPN. Four grades of Hyperform HPN have been verified to enable an average of 5-8% energy savings during thin-wall injection molding by UL.
How can we take advantage of these types of energy savings?
If you’re a PP processor or brand owner based in Thailand, Milliken’s performance-driven additives portfolio can help you harness energy savings that impact the planet and your bottom line. The entire value chain can benefit by using Millad NX 8000 or Hyperform HPN, and UL Environmental Claim Validation label can help relay sustainability gains to customers. A Milliken associate can work with you directly to see how you can save energy, reduce CO₂ emissions, and incorporate the UL Environmental Claim Validation label onto your product or packaging.
