Investing in the Next Generation
Milliken’s Summer Internship Program
Auteur : Mary Kate Griffin
A core value to Milliken is People, from caring for our associates and communities to investing in our associates for the long haul. Milliken also sees the value in investing in its potential associates, especially students. This summer, Milliken hired 30 college students from across the country to participate in summer internships within corporate Milliken and its four businesses.
“This summer’s intern cohort is an impressive group of young people,” Eric Chapman, a Milliken talent acquisition specialist, said. “They come from all different disciplines, states, and cultural backgrounds, and they are excited to do their jobs well.”
This summer’s interns hail from eight states and represent over 13 disciplines of study, from cognitive science to chemical engineering. In early June, interns met at Milliken’s global headquarters in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where they met with CFO David Smart and division representatives and toured the Allen and Magnolia plants.
Milliken interns work a full-time schedule and receive hands-on experience with a project assigned to them under the direction of a sponsor. Since its inception 30 years ago, Milliken’s internship program has evolved into a pipeline for full-time positions. Alyssa Howard, a chemical manufacturing intern at the Allen Plant, received offers from two Milliken plants for process improvement roles.
“I was keeping an eye on the Milliken careers page for job openings, and I applied to a process improvement roll at a different plant. When I spoke with Eric, he told me about a plant that was also hiring for that role,” Howard said. “Milliken encouraged me to go with the offer that best suited me. I look forward to starting my full-time career with Milliken in September.”
“Milliken is a great company and really wants the best for you,” Howard said. “I got my first choice, and Milliken did everything to get me out there and experience what it’s like there.”
With over 8,000 associates and over 70 locations worldwide, Milliken continues to secure its future success by supporting young professionals through internships. As Milliken leaders develop their teams with an eye to the future, interns will make up the next generation of associates who together will strive to positively impact the world around them for generations to come.
